There are plenty of people who have lived the past hundred. It’s always fascinating to learn about the lives and works of these people since they have lived and breathed in different timelines.

But whenever we begin thinking in this path, one common question always pops up- Who is the oldest person living in this world?

The statistics for this seems to sadly change every year. But for now, the record for being the oldest person in the world is being held by a Japanese woman named Kane Tanaka.

Tanaka celebrated her 117th birthday on January 2 in her nursing home. But she wasn’t alone at all. She celebrated this milestone with friends and staff. Her momentous day was recorded by local broadcasters TVQ Kyushu Broadcasting Co.

It was just last year that Guinness World Records confirmed Tanaka to be the oldest person living in this world. On March 9, it was confirmed by Guinness that Tanaka was aged 116 years and 66 days. Kane Tanaka was born in 1903 but she was a premature baby.

In 1922 she was married to Hideo Tanaka. The beautiful couple had five children- four of their own and one that they adopted.

But Tanaka’s age has brought to the forefront a discussion which has been going on for a long time in Japan. This is regarding Japan’s rapidly ageing population. But it isn’t just the rapidly ageing population which is cause for concern, it’s also the falling birthrate which is causing problems for the island nation.

The situation is so dire that concerns are now being raised about economic growth and labor shortages. As for a solution, currently, there’s none that seem to be working. Yet, that’s a problem for a nation to solve. Tanaka has done her part and now it’s time for her to enjoy herself.
